Cisco VPN Client manual reinstall when Installation fails

I had an issue with Cisco VPN v5.0.0.0340 where the first installation never finished and locked up.  I performed basic troubleshooting such as restarting the LT and starting the installation over again.  The installation never loaded to the Install Shield wizard.  I downloaded the latest version from Cisco.com, v5.0.07.0410, and attempted a reinstallation.  Same situation occurred where the installation window would not appear.  The Cisco VPN Client install became corrupted and a manual uninstall was required.  A few additional steps were added to the reinstallation to get it to work.

Reinstall under a new Local Admin Account

  1. Created a Local Admin account to run the installation under a new and different local non-domain profile
    1. As a side note, I also did not have the network cable plugged in during the manual uninstall/reinstall
  2. Ran installer for v5.0.07.0410 (latest version from Cisco.com)
  3. Installation failed with “Deterministic Network Enhancer – Add plugin failed.”
  4. This is an issue with the Citrix DNE adapter driver that comes packaged with the Install Shield of v5.

  5. Restarted LT and proceeded with a manual uninstall of Cisco VPN client and DNE adapter

Manual Uninstall and Reinstall of Cisco VPN Client v5.0.07.0410

  1. All of these steps were done from a newly created Local Administrator account and not the users Domain profile.  I was also disconnected from any network/internet connectivity.
  2. Uninstalled all Cisco VPN Adapters from Device Manager (in my case there were two).  Restarted LT.
  3. Followed the following uninstallation steps:
Here are steps that will help with the uninstallation:

1)    Remove the VPN Client (any version) from the machine using the MSI cleanup tool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Upgrade the DNE using this link of Deterministic Networks
http://www.deterministicnetworks.com/support/dnesupport.asp

Run the WINFIX application and then the DNE upgrade.

2)    Take a backup of the registry.
3)    From your desktop, go to Start > Run and type regedit.
4)    Remove the following keys:

a) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Cisco Systems > VPN Client.
b) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Deterministic Networks and remove the keys.
Note: Sometimes the system will not allow for the removal of this key.

c) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall >{5624c000-b109-11d4-9db4-00e0290fcac5}.
d) Delete all the old Deterministic NDIS Extender (DNE) files: any file starting with DNE as all are files coming along with VPN Client installations.

dne2000.sys from %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers
dne2000m.inf and dne2000m.pnf from %SystemRoot%\inf

e) The Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) enumeration of the dne2000.inf and dne2000.pnf files.

The OEM enumeration .inf file is a file called “oem (some numeric value).inf.”
For example, oem2.inf and oem2.pnf.

Note: Be careful to remove only OEM files from the DNE.

dneinobj.dll from %SystemRoot%\system32. You may need to reboot before this file can be removed.

f) Delete the following file: cvpndrv.sys from %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers

5)    Reboot the machine

6)    Find for the CSGina.dll file in the system32 folder rename it to CSGina.old

7)    Reboot the machine

8)    Disable any firewall if any is installed.

Hope that helps.

  1. I also deleted C:\Program Files\Cisco VPN Client – it took a few reboots to remove all files, it wasn’t until I ran WinFix.exe was I able to remove this complete directory.  Restarted LT again.
  2. Downloaded WinFix.exe and dneupdate32.msi from Citrix:
    http://www.citrix.com/lang/English/lp/lp_1680845.asp
  3. Reinstalled original Dell NIC drivers to make sure nothing became corrupted in the last failed installation attempts.
  4. Ran the dneupdate32.msi and uninstalled the previous copy.  The last previous copy was installed with the Cisco VPN Client and there was a pending installation that was found when I was doing the uninstalled.  I approved it and continued with the uninstallation. Restarted.
  5. Ran WinFix.exe and this removed all excess DNE update drives and files.  Restarted
  6. Installed DNE drivers from Citrix (dneupdate32.msi). Restarted.
  7. Reinstalled the Cisco VPN Client v5.0.07.0410 in a Next, Next, Next style
    1. Windows XP prompted to install an unapproved Network Enhancer Miniport driver, clicked Continue Installation
  8. Installation Successful!!  Restarted LT.
  9. Logged back in as a local admin and opened Cisco VPN client and it opened as it should.
  10. Logged off local admin and signed in as user with domain credentials and configured Cisco VPN client and tested.  Everything worked as it should.

Notes

I was able to get this working through Internet Explorer 8, but I still prefer Firefox.  So if anyone has

Cisco SDM can be used with the following browsers:
